Stronger South Derbyshire is our dedicated website set up to support the local community response to Covid 19, which is updated regularly. If you want to know how you can help, know someone who needs help, are a community group needing support, or if you’re just looking for links to reliable information, visit

Changes to our Services

Due to the social distancing measures introduced by the Government, South Derbyshire CVS premises are currently closed to the public and visitors, and staff are working from home. All our group activities and most community based face to face services have stopped for the time being. This includes Befriending visits, Befriending Groups, Travelling Lunch Club, Active Travel, Social Car, Safer Homes and Shopmobility.

South Derbyshire CVS and the Derbyshire Home From Hospital Support Service are continuing to support vulnerable individuals who are self-isolating and who don’t have any family or friends who can help, with essential food shopping, collecting medication, and  telephone befriending/welfare calls. We can also tell you about other services which may be able to support you.  If you have not used our services before you should first register for help via the Derbyshire Community Response Unit.  Register online at or by telephoning 01629 535091 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm). They will take some basic information and then pass your details on to us.

South Derbyshire CVS Practical Help Scheme

A NHS funded scheme which supports people who need a little help to stay healthy and at home in their local community. In particular it aims to help reduce the number of hospital admissions, get patients home quicker and help them stay at home. Short term practical help can be provided for example :

•  Giving someone a lift home from hospital

•  Making sure they have basic food supplies

•  Visiting to check they are ok for the first few days after they come home

•  Taking someone shopping or doing the shopping for them

A referral will be required from a Health or Social Care professional for hospital discharge short term support.

Gardening and low level household maintenance tasks

Open to residents of South Derbyshire who are over the age of 65 or anyone who is unable to maintain their garden or do simple DIY tasks due to ill Health or Disability. Referrals are taken from South Derbyshire District Council so please contact them in the first instance.

Social Car Scheme

We also continue to run our popular Social Car Scheme alongside the practical help scheme. This is a volunteer transport service. We aim to match up transport requests with volunteer availability. Because our drivers are volunteers we may not always be able to meet your needs, however we will always do our best to help you with your journey.

The Social Car Scheme can enable people to:

•  Attend medical appointments

•  Visit a relative or friend

•  Attend social activities

•  Go shopping

The scheme is open to anyone who lives in South Derbyshire and is unable to use any other form of transport. Enquiries and bookings can be made Monday - Friday Mornings (9:00am - 12:00pm) and transport is available seven days a week subject to the availability of drivers.

The scheme is non profit-making.  However there is a charge made to the client of £1 per journey booked, plus 45p per mile (which is paid to the driver to cover their expenses).
