Community Managed Libraries

Derbyshire County Council’s Libraries for Derbyshire strategy was agreed by Cabinet on 20th December 2018. Part of this strategy is to transfer 20 libraries to community management – including 3 in South Derbyshire: Melbourne, Etwall and Woodville.

Derbyshire County Council are now seeking organisations to take on the running of Community Managed Libraries, and have arranged open days for people who are interested. They will be held when the library is closed, and will be an opportunity to have a look around, find out more, and ask questions of experienced library staff and their colleagues (for example property, finance and procurement specialists).

The South Derbyshire Open Days are between midday and 6pm on the following dates:
•          Melbourne: Thursday 14 March 2019
•          Etwall: Tuesday 19 March 2019
•          Woodville: Tuesday 30 April 2019.

South Derbyshire CVS will be attending some of the sessions. If you can’t make them and you would like us to ask any questions on your behalf, please contact us via:

Information, packs and other resources are available on the dedicated Libraries for Derbyshire website:
To find out more, or to register your interest in coming to the open day you need to contact Derbyshire County Council via email or tel. 01629 536166 (staff who answer this number will not be able to answer any questions, but can take your details and arrange for the appropriate person to call you back).

Advice and support will be available to a group taking responsibility for a library - for example around legal structures, finance and funding, and recruiting and managing volunteers. Arrangements for this have not yet been agreed - but if, in the meantime, you have general questions about any of these issues (not questions specifically about the libraries) Development staff at CVS should be able to help – email
