South Derbyshire Community Awards 2018

Sponsored by  Toyota Manufacturing UK Logo

The South Derbyshire Community Awards are back!

After a great success last year, the Awards are promising to be another great celebration of the people and organisations who do so much for South Derbyshire.

The South Derbyshire Community Awards are your chance to say ‘thank-you’ to those who give so much to benefit our local community. If there is a person, team or organisation you think stands out, make sure they get the recognition they deserve by nominating them for an Award.

The closing date for nominations is midnight on Wednesday 31 October. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on Thursday 22 November.

The South Derbyshire Community Awards are organised by South Derbyshire CVS and Swadlincote & District Chamber of Trade with sponsorship from Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd and the 7 individual award category sponsors listed below.

There are seven award categories:

  • Long Service Award -sponsored by East Midlands Airport

This award is to recognise an individual who has volunteered their time and energy over a number of years, making a real difference to the organisation or cause they support.

  • Unsung Hero –sponsored by Clive's Candles

Do you know a special person who goes above or beyond for their community? Who quietly gives a lot but never gets the recognition they deserve? This is the category to nominate them for!

  • Young Volunteer of the Year – Sponsored by Smith Partnership

This award is to recognise a young person under the age of 25 who has shown enthusiasm and commitment to an organisation or cause, and made a real difference.

  • Team of the Year – Sponsored by Mercia Marina

Can't single out an individual? This award is for a team of people who stand out for their commitment and hard work, who make a difference to their community or cause.

  • Community Minded Company – Sponsored by South Derbyshire Chamber of Trade

Do you know a local business in South Derbyshire that makes a difference to the community they work in? Maybe by fundraising for a good cause, or giving time and skills, or going the extra mile to make their services accessible and friendly to those in need.

  • Local Charity or Voluntary Group of the Year – Sponsored by Timm's Solicitors

This award is to recognise a local charity or community group doing great work in South Derbyshire. If you know an organisation that deserves a special thank you for their work this year, this is your chance to tell us about it.

  • Love Where You Live or Work – sponsored by South Derbyshire District Council

Do you know a person, group, project or organisation that has done something to make a difference to the local environment or community, creating a safe place for everyone to enjoy? This could be anything from reducing litter, recycling waste, or encouraging others to take pride in South Derbyshire.

Top Tips for a Good Nomination:

Please include as much information as possible. The shortlisting panel make their decisions based only on the information given in the nomination form, so please write your nomination to include as much detail as you can. The panel does not know how great the person or people you are nominating are, so you need to tell us this in your nomination.

Click here to view an example of what a nomination could look like.

If you aren't sure what category to make your nomination for, choose more than one - the panel will decide which category to best place your nominee in.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who can I nominate?

Individuals, teams, projects or organisations in South Derbyshire, or whose work benefits South Derbyshire residents.

Who can make a nomination?

As long as the person being nominated is eligible for the award we will accept nominations from anyone. You could be a staff member, service user or beneficiary, customer, local resident, funder, partner organisation or a member of the public. Tell us who you think deserves an award.

Can I nominate my own organisation, or my volunteers/team?

Yes, absolutely – we would encourage you to celebrate the good work done by your organisation or volunteers!

Do I need to tell them I'm nominating them?

Yes, before making a nomination please make sure that the person or organisation consents to being nominated, is happy for the information about their nomination to be made public if they are shortlisted and is able to attend the Awards Ceremony on the evening of Thursday 22 November.

How will you decide on the winners?

A panel of sponsors will consider all the applications submitted for each category and agree a shortlist. Winners for each category will then be chosen from the shortlist and announced at the Awards Ceremony, where they will be presented with a trophy. We will make our decision based purely on the information you provide in your form – so please tell us as much as you can about your nominee and why they deserve an award. More information can be found at

What if I'm shortlisted?

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an Awards Ceremony at Burton on Trent Golf Club, Bretby on the evening of Thursday 22 November. There will be a buffet supper and entertainment before the winners are announced and presented with their trophies. The other shortlisted nominees will be presented with South Runner-up Certificates. Please make sure your nominee, or someone to represent them, will be available to attend.

What about those who are not shortlisted?

We expect to receive lots of nominations, so not everyone will get a prize. However we will write to everyone nominated to let them know they were put forward and to acknowledge their community contribution.

How do I make a nomination?

Please complete a separate form for each person, team or organisation you want to nominate. You can complete and return the form below by email or post, or submit your nomination online at: Closing date: midnight on Wed 31 October 2018.
